Sayers Wins His First Open Singles

Yesterday at the Racquet and Tennis Club a new champion was crowned.

Bryn Sayers the world number 4 defeated Steve Virgona the world number 2 in a 5 set thriller.

The score was 0/6 6/5 4/6 6/3 6/1

A ‘shock’ result?  No, it was always possible especially after the way Sayers played in the British Open Singles last November where he defeated Virgona in the semi-finals and took Fahey to 5 sets where Sayers defended 11 match points before finally submitting to Fahey.

This result is exciting for the game.  Sayers has now proven he can live with the hard hitters of the game and tournament winners will no longer be so easy to predict.
