The US Open 2010

The Winners

For the first time in many years there were major upsets in the semi finals with the defeat of Camden Riviere by James Stout and the defeat of Steve Virgona by Bryn Sayers.

Two players in the final who have never reached the sharp end before.  For Tennis this is really very exciting as now there are new players who can upset the seeding of the established players.

In the final James defeated Bryn in 4 sets 6/2 6/2 3/6 6/2

In the final of the doubles event, the finalists were Tim Chisholm and Camden Riviere against Steve Virgona and Ben Matthews.  Tim and Camden have played together quite frequently but I believe it was the first time Steve and Ben have paired up.

What a pairing they turned out to be.  They defeated Tim and Camden 6/5 6/5 6/1

Steve’s record in doubles victories in Open events is lengthy.  In the inaugural World Championship Doubles event in 2001 he was the finalist and since 2003 he has been the Champion partnered by Rob Fahey.  For Ben Matthews it is his first major title.  The Singles Event for Ben also was a watershed in that now he has a Singles world ranking.

Congratulations to the winners, commiserations to the finalists and the next major event for professional players is the US Professional Singles at Newport in June.
