Profile
Chris began his real tennis career at the Oxford University Tennis Court in 1971, as assistant to Peter Dawes. When Peter left nine months later, Chris took over as head professional. In 1973 he (and his family) moved to Australia to work at the new Royal Melbourne Tennis Club, which housed the first courts to be built in the world for sixty years. At the end of 1978 he returned to the UK for a year at Troon and then, in 1979, moved to London and started work at the Royal Tennis Court. Chris became World Champion in 1981 and then went three years and eighteen tournaments without losing a singles match. In 1984 he became the first player to win a Grand Slam of all the major Opens and, in total, won twenty majors. He has also been heavily involved in the worldwide revival of real tennis, leading a rescue team to Bordeaux when the club there went bankrupt in 1982 and holding shares in Holyport, Ballarat and Romsey. He has spent decades serving on committees of the T&RA and the IRTPA and for five years was Chairman of the IRTPA World Championship Committee. With his father and sister, he has published nearly twenty books on tennis and has written the only modern coaching book (and produced a DVD): Tennis - A Cut Above The Rest.
