| Kate 'discovered' the game whilst managing the swimming pool at the Harbour Club and decided to become a professional two years later, accepting a position as a training professional at The Oratory. She spent 4 years at The Oratory, also working as the Hardwick Professional and as a part time teacher before moving on to Cambridge as an Assistant Professional to Kees Ludekens, Fontainebleau as joint head professional with Arnaud Domange and on to Melbourne where she worked as Deputy Head Professional. Since 1996, Kate has also had to cope with a knee injury and 7 operations to keep in the game. After the 2003 World Championships she decided to have a break from the game and follow another passion when she organised and performed the Great Australian Cycle Expedition (GRACE Expedition). The 9 1/2 month, 25 000km unsupported expedition (no support vehicle) also included 7000km of 'off road' cycling on isolated tracks. A normal journey around the main highway is about 15 000km. The most difficult of these was the Canning Stock Route; the world's longest stock route which crosses 4 deserts, 1000 sand dunes and extreme temperatures over the 1800km. Kate is the first woman the cycle the Canning Stock Route. The purpose of the expedition was to promote awareness for the importance of sustainability education and the project was chosen by the United Nations as Australia's first and one of the world's first 'Demonstration Activities' for their Decade of Education for Sustainable Development which began in 2005. For further information about the expedition you can check out the website at http://www.gracexpedition.org or contact Kate. (Or wait for the book!) Since completing the journey (28 February, 2005) Kate has been developing her motivational presentations and has been a keynote speaker for two UNESCO conferences, given corporate presentations, talked at schools and interested groups. She is also writing a book. Kate has been working part time at the RMTC and recently won the Australian Open singles and doubles. |
