Profile

Roman was born in Sydney and took up real tennis in 1989 when a student at Oxford, where he captained the university team. His game has improved significantly since returning to live in Oxford in 2001. In 2005 he partnered World Champion Rob Fahey to win the National League Premier Division. In the same year he won the Category A 0-9 Tournament. Roman has also represented Australia in the Bathurst Cup, the team event for the world’s top amateur players. After twice failing to obtain a job as a club professional in his early twenties, Roman became a university lecturer, teaching politics and sociology. He retired from academia aged 33, and now works part-time as a gardener and for The Oxford Muse, a charity that conducts experiments in the art of living. In September 2006 Ronaldson Publications will be publishing his book on the sport, ‘The First Beautiful Game: Stories of Obsession in Real Tennis’.
