World Rankings and Smoothing Explanation

Published on: Mar 4, 2022

The world rankings run over a 3 year period.  Because of the pandemic there were no ranking events from the conclusion of the U.S. Open 2020 until the British Open 2021.

During the three year period points diminish on each annual anniversary date of that tournament’s conclusion:

First year:    Full points
2nd year:     ⅔ rds of full points
3rd year:      ⅓ rd of full points
4th year:      No points remain

To help minimise the devaluing of individual player’s ranking a ‘smoothing constant’ has been written into the programme.  This was achieved by taking the world ranking total of all players following the conclusion of the U.S. Open 2020.  The smoothing constant of 1/6th will remain in force until March 2024.

The rankings following the U.S. Open 2020 were:

Taking Camden Riviere’s ranking of 101529 1/6th of this is 16,921.  His individual ranking record shows the smoothing constant of 16,921:
